Photo 1, about 1900. Charles Able Jencks
Charles was born November 27, 1878 in Red Cloud, Nebraska. In 1899, he and his brother William were travelling to Western Oklahoma Territory to file upon and homestead some land. In Guthrie, OK, they met John and and his sister, Hulda Hallberg, who were also seeking land.
Photo 2, about 1900. Hulda Johanna Hallberg
Hulda was born March 16, 1881 in Iroquois County, Illinois. Charles married Hulda on December 4, 1900 at Guthrie, Oklahoma. (See Marriage License) After their marriage, Charles and Hulda, along with their brothers, travelled to land they had previously filed upon, five South and one-half miles West of Cheyenne, Ok, Charles and Hulda built a 160 square foot half-dugout to serve as their home for the next 8 years.
Photo 3, late 1905. Carrie, Charles, Ross, and Hulda.
Four children were born in the dugout. Carrie, 8/26/1901, Henry, 3/26/1903, Ross, 5/27/1904, and Hazel, 7/25/1906. (See entries in Hulda's Swedish Bible) Henry Monroe died 13 days after birth, April 8, 1903, of whooping cough. In 1908, they built a two room house which would serve as their home for the next 39 years. Four more children were born in that house, Verne, 7/15/1908, Mildred, 9/ 8/1910, Esther, 9/20/1912, and Oren, 5/19/1918. As the family grew, another two rooms were added.
Photo 4, about 1908. Ross (on horse) Charles, Hulda, and Hazel (in chair).
This picture shows their newly finished house facing North, with the front door behind Hulda. The house was built about 200 feet Northwest of the dugout. Although the house faced the County road, the driveway remained the same as used for the dugout and everybody entered the house across the porch in back. The rooms added, a kitchen and bedroom, were on the Southwest side forming an L shape, with the kitchen becoming the main entrance. The mules shown in the picture (white - Kate) was the team that brought Charles and Hulda to Cheyenne in 1900.
